TEFL Jobs in the Azores: The Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, are an archipelago in the mid-Atlantic. The islands are characterized by dramatic landscapes, fishing villages, green pastures and hedgerows of blue hydrangeas. São Miguel, the largest, has lake-filled calderas and the Gorreana Tea Plantation. Pico is home to the 2,351m Mt. Pico and vineyards sheltered by boulders. Be warned that you will not become rich teaching English here and may need to take on more than one job to pay for the rising cost of living. As usual in Western Europe, it is much easier for English-speaking EU nationals (i.e British and Irish) to find work due to European bureaucracy. Work Permit: Citizens from EU do not require any Portuguese work visa to live or work in Portugal. However, those who come to work in Portugal for longer than six months with need to obtain a so called "Residence Certificate" (Certificado de Registo). Work in Portugal for non-EU citizens, however, has been affected by Portugal’s high unemployment in recent years. Portugal currently has quotas in place to limit the number of jobs that go to third-country nationals to improve employment opportunities for EU nationals. Most jobs need to be advertised to Portuguese and EU citizens for 30 days before the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training in Portugal (IEFP) will classify them as jobs that can be freely filled by non-EU employees. Demand: More and more young locals in the Azores want to learn the English language with the intention to find a well paid job on either on the mainland (Portugal) or in a different country. The growing demand for English teachers can be seen everywhere. Even though most public schools offer English as a second language classes, in most cases that is by far not sufficient. Hence many parents in Ponta Delgada but also all other major cities are looking for language schools where they provide additional English classes for their children.
